Several reasons why students may benefits of U-shaped seating arrangement:

The benefits of having assigned seats from the beginning are that you get to learn students names quicker, taking role becomes easier, and you establish your control over the classroom from the beginning. On the other hand, you probably will not know student relationships at the beginning of the year and might have some issues arise by friends or enemies being seated next to each other.
